Lesson 12 of 72 · All the note names, in a timed game
In this lesson, you will:
Find any note without thinking
Beat your own records
Play a famous melody on the white keys
1. Learn: Your landmarks
Group of two black keys: C on the left, D in the middle, E on the right.
Group of three black keys: F on the left, G and A inside, B on the right.
Middle C in the middle of the keyboard, and the same note comes back every octave.
The musical alphabet: A B C D E F G, then back to A. Forward to the right, backward to the left.
Why this way: Timed challenges turn knowledge into a reflex: your head no longer has to search, your eyes and fingers just know. And the notes you’ve just learned will come back in today’s practice, right before you’d forget them.
2. Challenge: 60 seconds: the names
Find as many notes as you can in one minute, in any octave.
3. Challenge: 60 seconds: the rematch
The same challenge, one more round. Can you beat your first score?
4. Quiz: Review
Which finger is number 1?
C is to the left of a group of…
Which note is just to the right of the group of three black keys?
A half note lasts…
Which letter comes right after G?
Going up, what comes right after B?
5. Guided play: Mystery melody
Play this melody note by note… Do you recognize it? (The title is in the next step.)
6. Quiz: So, that melody?
What was the mystery melody?
7. Piece: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
The full version, in rhythm. The A is played with your pinky (5): your hand opens a little, then comes back. Measures 1–2: open hand (G with finger 4, A with 5). Measure 3: your hand comes back to C position.
