Black-key melodies

Lesson 5 of 72 · Your first complete little songs

In this lesson, you will:

1. Learn: Hot Cross Buns

This old English nursery rhyme has only three notes: the keys of the group of three black keys, from high to low, with fingers 4, 3, 2.

In the middle, each note is played four times, quickly: these are eighth notes, two per beat. You’ll learn all about them later.

2. Guided play: Hot Cross Buns, note by note

Take your time: the next key lights up.

3. Piece: Hot Cross Buns

Now in rhythm. Keep fingers 2-3-4 on their keys.

4. Guided play: Mary Had a Little Lamb

Another little song on the black keys. In measure 4, your pinky (5) reaches up to the group of two.

5. Piece: Mary Had a Little Lamb

In rhythm: quarter notes and half notes, and a whole note at the end (4 beats).

6. Practice: Listen and play back

Little melodies on the group of three. The first note lights up; it’s up to you to find the rest by ear.

7. Piece: Au clair de la lune (black keys)

Do you recognize it? With the same three black keys, you can play Au clair de la lune. The famous French children’s song, on the group of three.
