Lesson 9 of 72 · The four white keys around the three black keys

In this lesson, you will:

1. Learn: Around the group of three

Around every group of three black keys, there are four white keys: F on the left, G and A inside, and B on the right.

Notice the pattern? C and F are both on the left of a group; E and B are both on the right.

All seven notes: C D E around the two black keys, F G A B around the three.

Tip: G is between the 1st and 2nd black keys of the group of three; A, between the 2nd and 3rd.

2. Practice: F, G, A, B

Play the note asked for, in any octave.

3. Guided play: Four fingers on F-G-A-B

Thumb on the F above middle C, then 2, 3, 4.

4. Quiz: Which key is this?

5. Practice: All the white keys

The seven notes, in random order. Think of the black-key groups!

6. Practice: Listen and play back

Melodies on F, G, A, B. The first note lights up.

7. Improvisation: On the white keys

Just like the black keys, the white keys all go together over this accompaniment. Wander over C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and name the notes in your head as you play!
